Violence, broadly defined, is the most urgent problem of our times and the most challenging for professionals in the organizations that respond. In this gathering, Allan and Shelly will introduce the core ideas and methods of “response-based practice”, an approach to working with people who have used violence (“offenders”) and people who have been harmed (“victims-survivors”), adults and children. The content will be relevant for all professionals who are involved in addressing violence.

Shelly and Allan will focus on several closely related themes: How adults and children respond to, and resist, violence; the deliberate nature of violence; interviewing “victims-survivors” and “offenders”; the powerful role of social network and institutional responses; and the connection between violence and language. Time permitting, they will also discuss family law or “custody” cases where there is domestic violence and working with children who have viewed pornography and assaulted others. Example will be presented throughout.

Lidt om underviserne:

Allan Wade, Ph.D.

Allan lives on the unceded territory of the Quw’utsun First Nation, on southern Vancouver Island, B.C. He works as a family therapist, researcher, and consultant with a primary interest in promoting socially just and effective responses to violence and other forms of adversity. Allan works with individuals and families, with youth and adults, with people who have committed violence (“offenders”) and people who have been harmed by violence (“victims-survivors”). For guidance and inspiration, Allan is especially grateful to the Liard Aboriginal Women’s Society.

Allan provides training to professionals and community members who become involved in cases of violence: child protection, police, lawyers and judges, counsellors, shelter and refuge staff, youth workers, victim assistance workers, teachers and scholars. He teaches locally and internationally and has published many articles on the power of dignity and resistance, working with “victims/survivors” and “offenders”, the importance of institutional responses to violence, and the connection between violence and language

Shelly Dean, Ph.D.
Shelly lives on the traditional unceded ancestral lands of the Secwépemc Nation, known as Kamloops, BC, Canada.  She is a family therapist, clinical supervisor and works with organizations and communities to address issues of violence.  As a therapist, Shelly works with children, youth and adults who have experienced violence and other forms of adversity, with a special interest in victims who have experienced domestic and institutionalized violence.  Together with her team, Shelly also works with perpetrators of violence in the areas of risk assessments, pornography, and counselling.  Her doctoral research focused on children’s responses and resistance to violence–specifically understanding their behaviour in context, the nature of social interactions with young people, the connection between violence and mutualizing language, and the social responses that they receive.  Shelly also worked as a senior leader for a multi-service, non-profit organization for a large part of her career.  In this setting, Shelly applied the principles of Reponses-Based ideas in leadership and other organizational priorities such as policies and human relations challenges.  Currently, Shelly works with other professionals who are interested in Response-Based Practice as a supervisor and an organizational consultant.  She has also taught in the Master of Counselling programs through City University of Seattle and the Master of Education program at Thompson Rivers University. Shelly is also a proud wife, mother and grandmother.
